Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
