An defense official has stated that the MoD is actively looking into the possible threats associated with Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing classified information in all cars.
Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel
During a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD staff have been told not to discuss secret material while riding in Chinese vehicles.
He explained that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that safety is a issue in every modern cars.
We have a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have conversations at a secret level in any kind of car, due to the increasing threats of surveillance that exist in all automobile, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Defence Background
The revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.
This broader security environment highlights the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in all areas of government operations, including vehicle use to communication habits.
